Fast Clock Controller Features and Benefits

Important Notice – User Manual

The 28-page, fully-illustrated user manual is available online only. A printed copy is not included with the kit. Please download it here. (2.1MB PDF, right-click, save...)

The manual contains complete instructions for assembling the controller kit and modifying clock movements. I recommend looking it over as you consider whether to order the controller as a kit or fully-assembled, and clock movements ready to modify, or already modified by me.

What to Order

You need one controller to run as many as 10 clocks. and one modified movement for each clock. Order the controller as a kit that you solder together, or already assembled and tested.

Order movement kits with parts needed to modify them for fast-time (including a set of hands), or order modified and tested movements. (with a set of hands).

Order the items you want by clicking the buttons on this page. To buy more than one of an item, change the quantity in the shopping cart.

USE YOUR CREDIT CARD

When done adding the items you want, go to your shipping cart and click the Checkout button to pay with a credit card, or Checkout With PayPal to pay through your PayPal account.

If using a credit card, you'll see a screen like this. Make sure the Credit Card option is selected, then enter your billing and shipping information, and click the Review and Continue button.

When done checking out, you will see a screen confirming the transaction, and later will receive an email.

Fast Clock Controller

The fast clock controller runs up to 10 clocks fitted with quartz clock movements modified for fast-time operation.

Fast clock controller kit – $55.00

This kit includes the circuit board and all electronics parts. You provide switches, power supply, and a case, if one is desired.

Note: This photo shows only a representative assortment of parts, not everything that comes in the kit.

Assembly instructions are in the online User Manual (2.1MB PDF, right-click, save... so you'll have a copy for ready reference).

All switches are optional; with no switches connected, the clock starts running as soon as power is applied. You might choose to add a run/stop switch to stop the clock, and a reset pushbutton to quickly run the clock around to where it started, ready to go for the next operating session.

Also, many people don't use a case. Instead they screw the circuit board to the layout benchwork, and install the fast clock switches in an existing control panel or on the layout fascia.

Assembled fast clock controller – $90.00

Everything in the kit above, but assembled and tested. Again, you provide switches, power supply, and a case if one is desired.

Even though the fast controller is assembled, you'll still want a copy of the User Manual (2.1MB PDF, right-click, save...) so you know how to use it.

Movements and Hands

The secret to this fast clock is replacing a clock's original movement with a modified Klockit Q-80 movement, and operating it with the electronic controller. Modifying a movement takes 15-20 minutes, and is fully described and illustrated in the User Manual.

Because the Q-80 movement is a standard size, you can convert almost any clock into a fast clock. Usually the movement just snaps in! Or you can install it on any clock with the included nut and washer on the threaded shank. Use a clock already on hand, choose from the dozens available in stores, or build a kit from Klockit.

You need one modified movement for each clock on your layout.

Please note! The dial can be as large as 7" in diameter. You might be tempted to use a larger dial and longer hands, but this is not a good idea because the Q-80 movement isn't powerful enough to overcome the inertia of long hands. It may be possible to achieve reliable operation with larger clocks by fiddling with the resistor added to the movement, or trying to balance the minute hand, but don't say I didn't warn you.

Buy your clock first so you can measure the dial thickness before ordering a Q-80 movement. Measure the thickness of the clock dial ("B" in this drawing), then order a movement that matches this thickness.

For example, most inexpensive plastic clocks have 1/8" dials, so if yours does, select 1/8" in the Your clock dial thickness drop-down list below.. If your dial is between 3/16" and ¼" thick, order a ¼" movement. If about ½" thick, select ½" below.

Important - Please Read!

Pay attention when ordering Q-80 movements from Klockit! Only "Premium" USA-made movements can be modified to work as fast clocks.

Klockit's imported movements differ internally from the Premium Q-80, and they do not work with the fast clock controller.

I keep Premium Q-80 movements in stock, so you may order them directly from me and be assured of the correct type.

I offer Premium Q-80 movements and the resistors and wire to modify them for fast time, and also sell movements already modified and tested. Each movement (unmodified or modified) includes one set of hands. You get the #66927 hands for clock dials up to 7" in diameter unless you choose a different set. See Clock Hands below for details.

Movement kit $7.50
Includes one unmodified Premium Q-80 movement, the resistor, wire, and instructions to modify the movement, and one set of hands. Select your clock's dial thickness from the drop-down list. To buy more than one movement, change the quantity in the shopping cart.

Modified movement $20.00
Modifying the Q-80 movement is straightforward, but does involve soldering to tiny pins held in plastic. If the plastic softens and a pin loosens, there is a risk of breaking an extremely fine wire inside the motor.

Order this modified movement if you don't want to tackle the modification yourself. Includes one modified and tested Premium Q-80 movement and one set of hands. Select your clock's dial thickness from the drop-down list. To buy more than one movement, change the quantity in the shopping cart.

Clock hands
Each movement comes with one set of #66927 hands for clock dials about 7" in diameter, but you may want different hands for smaller clocks.

This is a photo of the four hand sizes and styles available, along with rulers to help judge the actual length. You can snip off a short portion of the minute hand if it is too long.

Clock hands

If you prefer hands other than the #66927, select from the Choose alternate clock hands list and click the button below it. (There is a 1¢ charge for alternate hands because the shopping cart doesn't allow items with no price.) You may choose one alternate set of hands for each movement you order. To choose the same alternate hands for multiple movements, change the quantity in the shopping cart.

Please do not order more hands than movements. Contact me for pricing if you need extra hands.
